The Hebrew slaves working the turquoise mines for Egypt were descendants of the twelve sons of Israel. Israel was Jacob, the grandson of Abraham. Abraham was the grandson of Eber, whose name literally means "the other bank of the river."

The word "Hebrew" itself - ivri - was taken by the Egyptians to mean "the others." It was potently enlarged to embrace the alienness of these Semitic others. The Hebrews could never shake this aboriginal conflation of their name with otherness. Early hieroglyphs showing the arrival of the spike-bearded herders from West of the Nile, the West Nile Virus, display a strong anti-Otherness. The Egyptians, as civilized agrarians with a monumental architecture, court hierarchy and massive standing army, had contempt for these nomadic shepherds.
