I prefer the insight of THX1138...cyberpunk knows and utilizes the
information about their cost evalution of the pursuit. The information
we want is the SOP's -- their routines, and to keep ours endlessly
morphing to fit the circumstances -- no routine. One becomes the
context, and not the content.
One is often alone, yes. But that is not an absolute thing. It is a
weakness we often have to labor under. It is restrictive. But insisting
on it as a value, as I think Chris Raven did, is sad, I think. Even the
most garage-level, street-level operation, a small network or bbs, a band,
vr performance art, a coffee house, club, workshop...whatever has a
greater field of possibility when you are involved with a group...Robert
Fripp called them "small, mobile, intelligent units".
Denying we are social animals involves meat issues, which are still
unresolved in cyberpunk. We will have to deal with it as the Greater
Culture becomes more impotent, splintering into sub-cultures,
"retribalizing" as some say, and folks who promote radical individualism
discover how unaware they are how much their "individualism" depended on
the transparent support of the Greater Culture.
.mpa has been in a thread with Lupus and Scatman. It's been amusing
watching those two hug tightly onto the redundant former-culture, like old
ladies dreaming of their youth. Momma's boys, all ballsy and feisty, but
saluting the flag and saying their now-I-lay-me-down-to-sleeps as soon as
.mpa forces another shovel-full of reality into the ditch of their
incomprehension.
But they're Real Men(tm) and won't fall for pinko, ultra-left-liberal,
comsymp lies, weakening *their* precssssiousssssss bodily fluidssssss
We're a lot freer than that.
